The third follow-up regional conference on “Strengthening capacities on combating organised crime, focusing on money laundering, human trafficking, evidence in criminal proceedings and international cooperation in criminal matters” took place in Pakse city, Champasak province from 23 to 25 November.
More than 70 law enforcement officials, prosecutors, and representatives of the judiciary from the southern provinces attended a number of presentations that covered the themes of the conference. Most of the sessions were dedicated to practical exercises on case studies and hands-on experiences on human trafficking and money laundering, led by experts of ILSTA.
Mr Richard Philippart, President of ILSTA, congratulated the Lao government with the adoption of the law on Mutual Legal Assistance and highlighted that “Mutual legal assistance is crucial to strengthen cooperation amongst parties to fight transnational organised criminal groups. Combating organised crime requires active international cooperation, cross-sector intelligence exchanges and modern investigation techniques. As a partner of the Lao government, ILSTA will continue our support for an efficient implementation of the Lao Mutual Legal Assistance Law.”
This conference’s fruitful outcomes are a testament to the successful cooperation between OSPP and ILSTA and sets new goals for joint events and a series of a conference in the coming year.
